A Celebration of Roses - Meet the Gardeners

Each Friday in June, during the Rose Celebration a member of the gardening team will be available in the Rose Garden from 11-12pm, to answer your questions.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

During this informal drop-in session, they’ll be free to chat with you about the rose garden, the future plans for it, and give you advice on how best to care for your own roses! Roses hold a special place in the history of Polesden Lacey. This tranquil and sweetly scented Edwardian walled garden holds a variety of roses.

In the central beds there are Hybrid Teas, Modern Bush roses, Floribundas, and Hybrid Musks. There are over 100 rambling and climbing roses that clothe the pergola and surrounding walls of the garden and in June and July the air is filled with the heady scent of their blooms. The outer borders are home to many wonderful Old Roses and Species Roses, from which all our more modern varieties are bred.

Accessibility

In the formal garden, most areas offer step-free access. Some paths around the garden and grounds are gravel, but most are smooth, with some grass paths in certain areas.

Other

The rose garden was transformed during Margaret Greville's time from a vegetable garden into a sheltered haven, filled with many varieties of her favourite flower, the rose. This was a highlight of any visit for her esteemed guests and she is pictured here frequently, proudly showing off the roses to dukes, kings and maharajas. A poignant reminder of Maggie's love of roses is the Greville Rose, specially bred for the National Trust by Peter Beales rose growers and also coming into bloom in June. This exclusive variety is planted just outside the walled rose garden, in front of the Edwardian socialite's grave, and is available to buy from the Polesden Lacey garden shop. A huge amount of work and investment has gone into restoring the rose garden in recent years, including renovating all the path and replanting many of the rambling roses on the pergola. There is no doubt Maggie would have been delighted by the enjoyment our visitors get from her beautiful rose garden today.
