Currently on display at Bateman’s is artwork by Hastings‑based artist Rebecca Child, who has created a series of intricate tunnel books interpreting scenes from The Jungle Book. These layered, hand‑crafted artworks are exhibited in Elsie’s Sitting Room for visitors to enjoy.

Rebecca Child is a visual artist based in Hastings, with a background in set design and prop making for theatre and film. She holds an HND in Theatre Design from Croydon College, a BA in Visual Communication Design, and an MA in Sequential Design from Brighton University.

Her current work explores optical and peep media of the 19th century, aiming to evoke the nostalgic and magical wonder of a Victorian childhood. The pieces on display depict moments from The Jungle Book and are a hybrid of a perspective theatre or ‘tunnel book’ and a peepshow, both of which were popular Christmas entertainments of the era.
