Suminagashi Marbling with Lisa Ibbetson
Connect with your creativity and flow state in this mindful Suminagashi Japanese ink marbling workshop. Set in the serene surroundings of the Monk's House garden. Tickets also include a visit to see Virginia Woolf's handbound Shakespeare collection.

Arriving at Monk's House you'll have some time to enjoy the garden and a personalised visit to Virginia Woolf's bedroom to see her handbound Shakespeare collection - binding these books was a mindful therapy for Virginia when experiencing headaches. Lisa will then facilitate the session with a welcoming meditation in the peaceful surrounds of the garden then onto a brief history of Suminagashi and it's origins and philosophy. Lisa will then guide you through techniques, experimentation and play to make several monoprints of the Suminagashi at a chosen points during the session. These decorative prints are a unique record of that moment in time and the creative variations are infinite. Each participant will take home their own unique Suminagashi prints from the day. They can be kept as a momento, framed, or used for further projects such a binding projects or bookmaking. Monk's House will be running further events on bookbinding during Summer 2026. Please get in touch with the property for more information. Please note that the house is closed on Wednesdays but your visit will include a visit to Virginia Woolf's bedroom to see her books. There will be a wet weather contingency space for the activity should conditions be unsuitable for working outside.

Please wear weather appropriate clothing and do note that you will be working outside for the duration of the session so please bring extra layers to wrap up warm.
