Creative workshop: Expressive line and mark making
Join artist Felicity Aylieff for a one-day drawing workshop that explores line and mark-making through movement, tools, and creative process.
- Booking essential
This workshop invites you to approach drawing as a physical and intuitive act—an open-ended exploration of where lines, gestures, and spontaneous marks might lead. By engaging with rhythm, motion, and the natural expression of your hand and tools, you’ll begin to uncover patterns, structures, and meanings within your materials.
Throughout the day, you’ll be encouraged to reflect on the relationship between action and thought—how we think through doing—and how movement itself can become a powerful form of understanding.
The day will begin with a welcome from Felicity and the Petworth team. We will then spend a short time in the gallery spaces exploring Felicity’s exhibition, Expressions in Blue. We will then make our way to The Battery House for the day, a space to explore drawing at scale with a range of tools and inks. Most of the drawing work will be floor-based so it may be useful to bring a cushion or kneeling pad.
In preparation for the day, we ask that you bring with you a tool you have made, found, or adapted that will make marks – this could be from a bunch of twigs, a long stick or something you have found or made at home. Anything that you feel will make interesting marks. The object/tool that you bring may be constructed like a piece of sculpture.
Once the workshop has finished, there will be a short opportunity to view the Expressions in Blue exhibition again in the House and gallery.
