Join Mellor & Rose for a festive 2.5-hour modern calligraphy workshop at Erddig, suitable for complete beginners and those with some previous experience.
Guided by tutors Lucy Mellor and Polly Mellor, you’ll learn the core techniques of calligraphy, including how to hold a dip pen, create contrasting strokes, form letters and link them together.
You’ll then put your new skills into practice with a range of Christmas-inspired projects, including festive words and phrases, decorative illustrations and flourishes, Christmas cards and gift tags. You’ll finish by creating a seasonal piece of wall art to take home, frame or give as a gift.
Your individual Calligraphy Box includes a starter kit, dip pen and nib, Christmas Calligraphy Workbook, themed worksheets and stationery. The box and materials are yours to keep so you can continue practising at home.

The Education Room is in a ground-floor outbuilding. Our gardens and outbuildings are accessible with ramped wheelchair access to the gardens. The paths in the gardens are fine loose gravel.
- Meeting point
The workshop takes place in the Education Room at Erddig.
- What to bring and wear
We recommend wearing layers and dressing for the weather on the day. The workshop takes place indoors and all calligraphy materials will be provided.
- Other
All materials are provided and your Calligraphy Box is yours to take home after the workshop.
