History of the Orangery

The Italianate terraces were an early addition to the garden, created by architect William Winde in the 1680s. Employed by William Herbert, 1st Marquess of Powis, Winde had created a similar garden at Cliveden, Buckinghamshire.

The Orangery is tucked into the terrace and would have been used as an entertaining space where one could circulate in good company, dine and enjoy the sight and sound of the garden below. The grand, classical stone doorway was brought here from the west end of the Castle itself, by Lady Violet, when she and her husband were returning the Castle to its more medieval appearance.

Today, potted orange trees line the building and inside, you'll find orange and yellow trumpeted clivias. Wall climbing roses surround the Orangery and neat hedges line the lawns.
