The Mystery of Elgar's Enigmatic Violin Concerto. A talk by Richard Westwood-Brookes

It is unquestionably one of the most romantic pieces of music ever written. Elgar himself described it as 'emotional, perhaps too emotional', but the fact remains that it was written with someone in mind - and Elgar never revealed who it was. All he would say was that it was a woman, and above the music he wrote a Spanish inscription which reads in translation 'Herein is enshrined the soul of ..' We will never know the identity of this mystery woman - but in this fascinating talk, Richard Westwood-Brookes provides an insight into who she may have been.
