You’ll need a full day to explore Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site combining the UK’s largest (and most important) monastic abbey ruins with an 18th-century water garden and deer park in one extraordinary North Yorkshire landscape.

Start your visit by exploring the abbey grounds, where you’ll find the impressive ruins of a 900-year-old monastery, once home to a thriving community of Cistercian monks until it was closed by Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Alongside the ruins, you can discover a working mill, orchard and Fountains Hall.

From there, follow the paths out into Studley Royal, where the landscape opens into sweeping views, lakes, cascades and deer-filled parkland. Take one of the higher routes to see some of the best views back across the estate and discover why this special place has been designated an internationally important UNESCO World Heritage Site.
