Accessibility at Hardcastle Crags

Generations of visitors have come to this secluded valley as an escape from the day to day, find out how we can support your next visit to Hardcastle Crags.

Arrival and parking

  • Designated Blue Badge bays are available in all Hardcastle Crags car parks, including Gibson Mill, Clough Hole, Lower Midgehole and Upper Midgehole. 
  • Parking at Gibson Mill for Blue Badge holders must be pre‑booked to ensure there is a space for you when you arrive. There are only two parking spaces available at the mill.
  • The main welcome point is Gibson Mill, which includes accessible toilets, café, second-hand bookshop and information. 
  • A manual wheelchair can be borrowed from the café at Gibson Mill.
  • All routes have uneven terrain, including gravel and natural woodland surfaces. Please download the site map here to see more information about walking trails. 
  • Distance from Midgehole Car Park to Gibson Mill: approx. 1 mile (about a 40‑minute walk)
  • From Clough Hole Car Park to Gibson Mill: approx. 0.6 mile walk; route is steep.

Moving around the site

  • Step‑free level access is available into and throughout the café, picnic area, ice‑cream parlour, second-hand bookshop and lower floor of Gibson Mill. 
  • All outdoor routes have uneven terrain, including gravel and natural woodland surfaces.
  • Some paths involve ramps, slopes or steps, depending on the trail chosen. 
  • No trampers or all‑terrain mobility vehicles are available at Hardcastle Crags.
  • The site includes multiple woodland and riverside trails; many have uneven, natural surfaces and may include gradients.
  • Only a small number of accessible paths exist, these are mostly around Gibson Mill and the courtyard area.
  • The most accessable walking trail is the estate track, however the surface is uneven and care must be taken. 
  • Seating is available throughout the woodland, along the estate track and on the riverside walk.
  • Seating is provided at Gibson Mill (café, courtyard and picnic areas). 
  • Surfaces across the site include gravel, compacted woodland earth, and natural uneven paths.
  • There is very limited phone signal throughout the valley, and Wi‑Fi is available inside Gibson Mill.

Moving around the buildings

Gibson Mill

  • Step‑free access is available across the main visitor facilities at Gibson Mill (café, second-hand bookshop, picnic area).
  • Some upper‑level spaces within Gibson Mill have stair‑only access.
  • A lift is available to the middle floor of the mill, but this must be operated by a member of staff. Please ask the café staff for assistance. 
  • Gibson Mill has natural light levels, these can vary with the season and day. 
  • Assistance dogs are welcome in Gibson Mill.
  • Large print and braille guides are available in the café and mill.
  • Seating is available at Gibson Mill in both indoor and outdoor spaces, including the courtyard, and picnic areas.
  • The area around Gibson Mill has natural woodland, water and activity sounds around visitor facilities, no building‑specific sensory warnings for Gibson Mill. 
  • Visitor facilities may be busier during weekends, holidays, and midday hours.

The Weaving Shed Café

  • The café, picnic area, ice‑cream parlour and shop all provide step‑free routes.
  • An induction loop is available in the café and ice cream parlour.
  • The Weaving Shed Café has natural lighting which can vary with the season and day.
  • Assistance dogs are welcome in the café.
  • Seating is available at the café, with additional picnic seating outside near Gibson Mill and on surrounding grounds.
  • The Weaving Shed Café is a popular spot and may have typical café sounds (conversations, service noise).
  • The café is likely busiest during weekends and warm‑weather days, as it is a central refreshment point for visitors.

Facilities

  • An accessible toilet is available at Gibson Mill, located near the mill entrance.
  • Toilets at Gibson Mill are waterless composting and unisex.
  • The accessible toilet at Gibson Mill can be accessed by requesting the key from the café team or radar key. 
  • Toilets are also available at Midgehole car park, but these have stepped access. 
  • Baby‑changing facilities are available at Gibson Mill as part of general toilet provision. 
  • Seating with arm rests are available inside the Weaving Shed Café.
