Open Archives - Housemaids and Jobs Below Stairs

Look behind the scenes with our research and archive volunteers to discover the lives of the housemaids and others who worked below stairs at Wentworth Castle.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

Life on a great estate was powered by its workers - including many female servants whose roles kept everything running smoothly. But what was it really like? For some, it was relentless work; for others, it offered an opportunity to leave home, earn a wage, and enjoy new freedoms.

We’ve loved hearing visitors’ stories about relatives who once worked at Wentworth Castle Gardens, and seeing the treasured photographs they bring with them. The Archive Team will soon be sharing a selection of these historic images, and they would love to learn more about the staff who shaped this place.
