White Park Bay wins WalkNI Award

White Park Bay Beach

Highlighting the very best of walking in Northern Ireland, the WalkNI Awards allow the public to vote for their favourite walking destinations across the country. Featuring some new categories this year including ‘Favourite place to walk your dog’ and ‘Favourite place to watch a sunrise/sunset’, the awards proved more popular than ever, with over 1,700 votes cast via WalkNI.com.

Murlough National Nature Reserve in Co. Down picked up the title of ‘Favourite Nature Reserve’ while White Park Bay came out on top in the ‘Favourite Place to walk on the Causeway Coast’ category. Both National Trust sites offer incredible walking experiences. Murlough offers multiple walking trails through dunes, woodland and heath against the backdrop of the Mourne Mountains, whilst White Park Bay lets walkers experience a magical secluded beach walk on the iconic Causeway Coast.

Other National Trust locations featured too, with the Giant’s Causeway coming in the top two of ‘Favourite Places to walk on the Causeway Coast’ in a closely fought contest with White Park Bay and the unique 18th century mansion and estate of Castle Ward placing second in ‘Favourite Place to walk your dog’.

Jayne Woodrow, from WalkNI.com, commented, “The WalkNI Awards enable us to showcase the outstanding quality and wide-range of walks that are available across Northern Ireland. We’re delighted to have National Trust sites feature so prominently in this year’s awards, as outstanding locations from White Park Bay to Murlough National  Nature Reserve offer unforgettable walking experiences in Northern Ireland.”

Delighted to hear of the National Trust’s achievements, Heather McLachlan, National Trust Regional Director for Northern Ireland commented, “It is fantastic to have won multiple accolades in the 2018 WalkNI Awards. Our properties are suitable for a wide range of walkers offering something for everyone from sandy beach walks and forest strolls to trails around historic estates and spectacular cliff top views. We look forward to welcoming more people in 2019.”
