Take a tour of Bembridge Fort

Bembridge Fort is situated on top of Bembridge Down. It was built in the 1860s at the same time as the Needles Old Battery but inside it is very different, both in its layout and general condition.

Bembridge Fort and Downs

For the safety of our visitors, volunteers and staff, Bembridge Fort is currently closed. Please check our homepage for further information.

Guided tours

Bembridge Fort is not open to the public and whilst in previous years access was by pre-booked guided tour we are not able to offer this currently. Part of the courtyard is occupied by an industrial tenant. The fort itself has suffered deterioration over time and each year we do more conservation work to help preserve this fascinating example of Victorian military architecture.

Our volunteers have worked hard to clear out years of accumulated debris and also to restore some of the rooms. Other volunteers now bring the history of the fort to life on guided tours.

Explore the Fort

PLEASE NOTE WE ARE NOT ABLE TO PROVIDE TOURS IN 2021.

Tours cost £5 per adult and £2.50 per child aged 10-16 years (National Trust members free), and must be booked in advance. They last approximately 1½ hours and are held every Tuesday at 2pm from April to October.

Additional weekday tours for groups of 10 or more people may be possible on request. We regret that tours are not suitable for children under the age of 10.

If you are considering coming on a tour, then you may find the following information useful:

  • There is free car parking just past the fort on the left hand side of the road.
  • There are no toilet or refreshment facilities available at the fort.
  • Assistance dogs are welcome in the fort but we’re afraid we can’t accommodate non assistance dogs.
  • The nature of the building means that there are some uneven floors, steep steps (although it is possible to miss these out) and narrow corridors. It can also be quite cool inside, so please wear clothing and footwear suitable for these conditions.
  • We supply torches for the darker sections of the tour.
To book or for more details please phone the National Trust Isle of Wight office on (01983) 741020 or send us an email.
