Our work at Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters

A volunteer clears scrub on a beautiful downland site to encourage more fragile plants to flourish

Our work at Birling Gap is varied and the list of jobs is endless. There’s always something to do, from general day to day maintenance to exciting new projects and making sure that our visitors enjoy everything that Birling Gap has to offer.

Countryside, coast and conservation

This fantastic countryside property is a wonderful collection of different habitats. The combination of chalk grassland, mixed scrub, unimproved coastal grassland, shingle beach and wave cut platform make this an incredibly important site both locally, nationally and internationally.

It supports a wide array of wildlife, some rare and some more common, but all of it beautiful. It takes a great deal of planning and management to keep this countryside in the best condition possible.

The rangers and volunteers are always busy, managing scrub, mending and replacing fences, clearing footpaths, mowing meadows, carrying out wildlife surveys, or clearing litter.

Every penny counts

The café and shop are an important part of our work here. They provide visitors with the opportunity to buy souvenirs and gifts in the shop and also to enjoy delicious food overlooking the beautiful cliffs and sea. More importantly, every penny of profit goes directly towards managing Birling Gap and the other wonderful South Downs countryside sites.

Family fun activities

Birling Gap is a fantastic place for fun filled family events. There are planned activities throughout the year but also plenty of opportunities for self-guided discovery.

The visitor centre is a brilliant place to discover more about the local area and a great place to start your journey. Activities and events help us to help our visitors have fun and get more from their visit. Hopefully it also gives them a reason to return and continue to support the work we do.
