Henry Jones: Advancement and connections

Henry Jones, inherited Chastleton from his father Walter

Henry Jones inherited Chastleton from his father, Walter Jones, in 1632, although his mother Elinor Pope, had the right to continued use of the property under the terms of the will.

His mother Elinor was to have 'one chamber well furnished and plate fitted to the same as shall be fit for my widdowe to have'.

In 1609, Henry married Anne Fettiplace, the daughter of a member of the local gentry. This marriage was another step in the advancement of the Jones family by developing connections to more established families.

This connection was important enough to be reflected in the house, with one of the grandest bedchambers having the Fettiplace coat of arms placed above the fireplace.

The 1633 inventory of the house even refers to the room as 'Mr Fettyplace his chamber'.

The Fettiplace Chamber is open to view on selected days throughout the season.
