Our Top 5 adventures at Dolaucothi
There's so much to do during your visit to Dolaucothi; from finding your fortune whist Gold panning, to spotting some of Britains most elusive mammals. We've whittled it down to what we think are our top 5 adventures that you simply must do.
1. Go on an underground adventure through time.
Ok, this is a pretty obvious one. If you're in Wales, you must go underground at the only known Roman Gold Mine in the UK. Discover what life was like for Roman miners, who tunnels through the landscape with only the most basic of hand tools; or for the Victorian miners who used explosives to break through tonnes of shale to get to the precious metal within.
There's guided tours running throughout the day between March and November
2. Take the trig point challenge
Climb to the highest point on the 2500 acre countryside estate. There's a network of colour-coded trails on the Dolaucothi estate but our favourite has to be the Trig Point trail. It takes you through rolling countryside, hill farms and woodland. The views from the top are just outstanding.
3. Sink a pint of local ale at the Dolaucothi Arms
After completing the Trig Point challenge you may be in need of some refreshment. Luckily the National Trust's Dolaucothi Arms sits in the heart of the village and landlady Esther has a cold pint of local ale with your name on it.
4. Explore the wider estate on horse back
With 2500 acres to explore, the best way to get around the whole estate is on horseback. We've teamed up with Natural Resources Wales to create a bridle way that encompasses the entire Dolaucothi estate and beyond. You can bring your own horse or enquire at one of the local riding schools.
5. Sleep under the dark skies at Dolaucothi Estate Caravan Park
Open from March to November this tranquil caravan park is the ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle and enjoy all that nature has to offer. The Caravan Park is run by our fantastic volunteers who can give you tips on where to spot wildlife or take your dog for a walk.
As night falls you'll be astounded by the starry sky above. The Dolaucothi Caravan Park is nestled deep within the Carmarthenshire countryside, opposite Dolaucothi Gold Mines and close to the Brecon Beacons, the worlds first International Dark Sky Reserve
