Garden Bees: the story behind the design

One of the painted motifs from the Garden Bees range

Designed exclusively for the National Trust by Karen Lowes, one of our in-house designers, this exciting new range features an abundance of adorable honey bees and pretty flowers. The designs are painted in soft yet contrasting colours and were inspired by the bees and flowers in the gardens at Sissinghurst.

The inspiration for this shop range stemmed from Vita Sackville West’s beautiful gardens at Sissinghurst. The garden rooms and the lime walk that provided an opportunity to explore the colour palette soundly whilst the orchard gave a glimpse of the busy working beehives.

Beautiful scents of flowers and the hustle and bustle of bees, butterflies and dragonflies fills the air. It is the natural grace and charm of the cottage garden that inspired our spring concept.

English in origin, the cottage garden uses an informal design, which has been reinvented by many personalities over the years. Karen took inspiration from these scenes and created beautiful watercolour paintings of her surroundings which then lead to this design.

" My favourite product from this range is the Garden bees tea towel as it really captures the movement of a swarm of bees."
