About The hills are alive

Cut and remove scrub and grass to help the next generation of chalk flowers and butterflies.

Help the next generation of flowers and butterflies on one of the largest areas of chalk grassland in the Chiltern Hills by cutting and removing scrub and grass, then burning it. Ashridge's chalk grassland is one of the most important habitats but it is under threat from scrub. The grassland supports very rare species of butterflies and plants, with good areas supporting up to 30 species of plants per square metre.

About the accommodation

This bunkhouse provides rustic, basic accommodation which comprises two restored barns located amongst the woodlands and grassland of the Ashridge Estate. The first building comprises two dormitories each containing five sets of bunk beds. The second building contains the kitchen, lounge, toilets, showers and disabled facilities. The kitchen has been recently refitted and outside there is a lovely seating area. The wild fallow deer are regularly seen on the lawn outside the bunkhouse. There is no mobile signal in the bunkhouse but you should find some with a short walk into the nearby woods.
