Floury fun for families at half term
Do your children enjoy baking at home, hunting for clues, getting crafty or tasting treats? Bring your family to Houghton Mill during half term and they can enjoy some floury fun inside our 18th century working mill.
Hunt for baking treasure
Hunt down recipe clues on our brand new, hands on cookie trail around the historic mill, created especially for our Flour Festival.
On your journey you’ll also find out some fascinating facts about how a Victorian water mill works. Experiment with opening and shutting model locks to see how they affect changing river water levels, heave sacks of grain using traditional pulley systems and turn a traditional hand quern to mill flour yourself.
Once you have found all the missing information you will be rewarded with a delicious freshly baked biscuit for your efforts!
Discover how you can turn flour into beautiful autumnal decorations at our free, drop-in family craft event on Tuesday 22 October.
Get inspired by the autumn colours and take home your salt dough creation to hang somewhere special at home.
Houghton Mill Bake Off
Get your wooden spoons ready, now is the chance for budding bakers to win a prize for their home baking! Pop in to the mill to pick up a free bag of Houghton Mill flour and get busy making mess in your kitchen.
All entries will be judged on Sunday 27 October and there will be separate categories for children and adults. Or if your children prefer to eat treats rather than bake them, you could always stop by on the day to sample the entries. Click here for how to join in and here for full competition Terms & Conditions.
After all that exploring there is always time for a treat! Pop into the Tea Room to lift the spirits with cookies, cakes, coffee or to try one of our 'limited edition' scones that will be on offer during half term as we celebrate our Flour Festival. You may find one you've never had before!
Step outside the mill and have an adventure, whatever the weather! Why not join us for our half term outdoor event and create an upcycled home for the birds in your garden this winter.
Look out for our mini nature trail and some of our favourite ‘50 Things to do’ during the autumn, from spotting funky fungi to making a wild crown.
Kick around the leaves on one of the many paths that lead from Houghton Mill. There are short strolls for little legs from the other side of the mill pond, or longer walks and cycle routes to the Hemingfords, Godmanchester and beyond for more active families.
