Behind its modest townhouse exterior, Wainman House is an elegant home with tiled floors, panelled walls, four-poster beds and period fireplaces. It has a private terraced garden, and a key for the flower-rich, walled garden of neighbouring Peckover House so guests can explore once other visitors have gone home for the day.
Peckover House and Garden is a classic Georgian merchant's townhouse, built in 1722 and home to the Peckover family - staunch Quakers with a history that includes banking, philanthropy and activism - for 150 years. You have free entry during opening hours here and at all National Trust places during your stay. Peckover has the Reed Barn Tea-room, plant sales and a second-hand bookshop.
Wisbech is the birth place of Octavia Hill, a pioneering thinker and social reformer and one of the three founders of the National Trust. Much of the town's historic Georgian architecture stills stands, and when staying at Wainman House, you can walk just a few minutes to shops, restaurants and a 200-year-old brewery.
The West Norfolk coast is just a 30-minute drive from here. Visit The Wash National Nature Reserve, the largest bay in England, for its unusual coastal scenery made up of saltmarshes, mudflats and open water. A little further on you’ll discover vast expanses of sand, sea and sky, from the bustle of Hunstanton to sailing at Brancaster and walks through pinewoods and dunes from Holkham to Wells-next-the-Sea, a quaint quayside town.
For family and friends holidaying together, you'll find Coach House Loft (sleeps two) and Peckover Stable Lodge (sleeps two) nearby.
