Booking tour tickets for the historic watermill

Houghton Mill offers two tours of the historic watermill; Pre-booked Guided Tours and a no booking required self-led  'Meet the Millers' experience. Tickets for the pre-booked guided tours are released every Thursday and you can book up to 2 weeks in advance. Members can book for free, while non-members will need to pay when booking. We sell out quickly and recommend booking early. We can accommodate a limited number of walk-ups on the day, but to guarantee entry please book online in advance.

Guided Tours

Our pre-booked guided tours run on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays subject to volunteer availability. Our knowledgeable tour guides will guide you through the journey of the grain, from where it was once hoisted up to the top floor from the barges below, right through to where the stoneground flour still comes fresh off the millstones today.

As your tour guide leads you through all three floors of the mill, you will discover the story of the old youth hostel, witness the migthy Victorian machinery, and learn the centuries long history of this unique building.

On milling days, you will also be able to experience the sights, sounds and smells of the historic watermill as it would have been over 150 years ago. Our volunteer millers bring to life the experience of running a mill, amidst the clamour of the shuddering machinery.

‘Meet the Millers’ Experience

New for 2022, our Meet the Millers experience allows you to enjoy a self-led exploration of the flour bagging floor and the milling floor. Witness the traditional milling process as our experienced millers provide demonstrations and show you how real stoneground flour is made.

Meet the Miller sessions are available every Sunday between 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm, there's no need to pre-book so just turn up between these times and make your way around the mill. Our millers will be on hand to answer any of your questions and share Houghton Mill’s exciting history.
