The impact of World War I was far reaching and even the Whitgreave family were affected.

Henry Egerton Whitgreave was the eldest son of Robert and Marion Whitgreave. Henry was born in Stafford and the family made their home at Bushbury Lodge in Clevedon, Somerset.

He joined the 1st Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry and reached the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. The unit suffered heavy casualties- some 464 men and only one officer returned unscathed.

Henry was killed on the first day of the 'Battle of the Somme' 1st July 1916. He was 34 years old and buried in the Redan Ridge Cemetery, No. 1 Beaumont-Hammel, France.
