Beatrix Potter: Play and Childhood exhibition at Mottisfont

A watercolour by Beatrix Potter from the Tale of Two Bad Mice

This event happened in 2016 and is now finished.

You’ll find 30 original drawings and watercolours by perhaps the world’s most beloved children’s illustrator and author, alongside a small selection of rare vintage Beatrix Potter dolls, figurines and books.

This is a unique opportunity to see these original artworks; due to light sensitivity, they are rarely exhibited outside of their permanent home in the Lake District.

Due to the popularity of the exhibition, you may have to queue to enter the gallery.

Timeless classics

The exhibition showcases some of Beatrix Potter’s most famous characters, whilst taking you on a journey into the world of play and childhood, from Peter Rabbit’s naughty antics to the Two Bad Mice as they wreak havoc in a doll’s house.

Beatrix Potter's unique combination of storytelling skill and a naturalist’s eye for detail have provided a lasting appeal, her carefully observed animal portraits perfectly setting off the prose which highlights that chaos follows when mischievous mice and curious kittens break the rules.

For anyone unable to access the upstairs gallery, we have digital versions of exhibitions on iPads which are available on lower levels.

Family fun

Accompanying our exhibition is a fantastic Beatrix Potter-themed adventure trail for younger visitors, inspired by her playful characters and colourful stories.

Open tiny doors to discover your favourite characters, while solving puzzles and completing activities. You'll even get to write your very own story, just like Beatrix Potter.
