Thousands of people visit Mottisfont every June to experience our internationally renowned collection of old-fashioned roses. But to get to them, visitors pass through an area that used to be a frame yard, which still feels quite stark and utilitarian.

Bringing a dream to life

Graham Stuart Thomas, who originally brought these old-fashioned roses to Mottisfont, always intended this third garden to match the beauty of the other two. Now our own gardening team are finally able to make this a reality, and we need to raise more money to help realise the full potential of this space.

What will the garden look like?

The new design mirrors the central rose garden and follows historic pathways, dividing the space into four quarters. A new water feature is planned as a central focal point, on the site of the old dipping pond.

Flower borders will provide bright colour alongside historic path routes

The planting will feature repeat-flowering varieties of roses, extending the garden’s seasonal interest. Deep flower borders will surround lawned areas perfect for picnics, while arches shade the paths. There will be places to eat and relax, and also to find out more about the roses and their history.

Plans for the new garden include restoring a historic glasshouse

A new plant nursery area will be created, a first for Mottisfont’s gardens. Visitors will be able to explore the nursery and discover how we develop young plants. We would also love to be able to restore the glasshouse that once stood along the wall here.

How can I help?

2016 is the final year we’ll be raising money for this exciting project, so this is your last chance to help us make history by contributing to this garden.

Money donated so far to this appeal has gone towards initial surveys and designs. We now need to raise more funds to pay for development works and construction, finally making these exciting plans a reality.
