In summer you'll find us taking many soft-wood cuttings of trees and shrubs named after Nymans, or family members, such as Forsythia suspensa ‘Nymans’ and Camellia ‘Leonard Messel’.
Later on in the season, when the cutting material becomes harder at the base but still soft at the top, cuttings from our famous trees, the Eucryphia x nymansensis ‘Nymansay’ and Eucryphia x nymansensis ‘Nymans Silver’ will be done.
Soft-wood cuttings are one of our most used techniques as we apply it to all manner of plants. We also propagate many Salvias, Fuchsias and Penstemons with this method. Many of our plants, once rooted and potted-on, find themselves for sale in our plant centre under the name of ‘The Nymans Collection’. This is a collection of plants that have been propagated directly from the garden.
The nursery also propagates plants that go directly back into the garden. This can be from plants that already grow in the garden, or where we buy in seed to help with the sheer volume of plants needed numbers as well as having a good variety of summer colour. An example of this would be the annuals that can be found in the summer borders. The nursery grow 5,000 annuals a year for that display alone. We also propagate and manage a conservation propagation programme to help protect and conserve our rare trees and shrubs in the garden.
