Time for tea at Rowallane Garden
Whether it’s a quick cuppa on the go, a refuel after a long walk or simply enjoyed while relaxing in Rowallane Garden, a cup of tea can often be exactly what you need. In fact, in 2020 we proudly served 3657 cups of Clipper Tea at Rowallane Garden.
The ethos of Clipper is ‘Natural, Fair and Delicious’; and we feel this resonates well with our National Trust core values in Food & Beverage. In 2018, Clipper became the world’s first tea company to switch to non-GM and unbleached tea bags; they’ve also pioneered a new sealant which uses a bio-plastic which originates from plants. Clipper is also the world’s largest buyer of Fairtrade tea, supporting over 114,000 producers and their families around the world.
Our most popular variety is ‘National Trust Tea’ which is made exclusively for our cafés. It is a careful blend of East African tea leaves and Assam tea from India that gives our tea it’s rich and robust flavour. The perfect companion for a sweet treat from our bakery counter.
At this time of year not only are the gardens full of beautiful blooms but are also abundant with health promoting herbs. An herbal tea blend or “tisane” is a combination of a variety of plant herbs, spices, berries, barks, roots, and flowers that are steeped in boiling water like tea leaves. Herbal teas are believed to encourage healing and improve overall wellness.
In our tea garden you will find lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) which was used to ease earache and headaches. Flowers of sweet-smelling honeysuckle have been used for the treatment of digestive ailments and the striking orange flowers of the pot marigold (Calendula officinalis) were considered beneficial in reducing inflammation and promoting wound healing. Many plants that were historically used for medicinal or culinary purposes have ‘officinalis’ in their name to denote their place in a monastery’s or an apothecary’s herbal distillery and storeroom.
Camellia sinensis, a relative of the ornamental camellias found in our walled garden at Rowallane, produces several different teas: Green Tea, Oolong Tea and Black Tea. The difference between them is down to the processes the leaves undergo once harvested.
Did you know?
- There are almost 2000 or so varieties of ‘tea’- it is not the plant that differs, but the way it is grown, where it is grown and what happens to it after the leaves have been picked.
- It is believed tea was discovered by accident in China when an Emperor allowed some leaves to remain in a pot of boiling water over 2000 years ago.
- 40% of all fluid drunk in Britain every day is tea.
