January 2017: Thank you

Steam Yacht Gondola

During the cold, dark days of January our efforts are focused on repair and restoration work, but our minds drift off to warm, sunny days sailing on Coniston Water.

And one of the best aspects of being out on the lake and the thing we miss most in winter is you, our passengers.

So if you sailed with us in 2016, and in case we didn’t say it loud enough at the time, we’d like to say ‘thank you’ for coming on board Steam Yacht Gondola.

Yes, yes, we know you enjoy the cruise - a wonderful, serene journey around Coniston Water. We know you like to breathe in the fresh lake air and marvel at the brooding Consiton fells towering over the neat rows of slate cottages tucked snugly into the hillside.

We know you like to hear stories of Coniston heroes like Donald Campbell who paid the ultimate price for his daredevil attempts to break the world water speed record on Coniston, and John Ruskin who had such a significant influence on Victorian art, architecture and society.

We know you enjoy exploring Gondola’s nooks and crannies for clues about its long and illustrious past, peering into the engine room and watching the engineer load fuel into the firebox, hearing the toot of the steam whistle and relaxing in the plush, grandly upholstered saloons.

But whilst you’re enjoying yourself on Gondola, you’re also helping to support the National Trust in everything we do here in the Lake District.

Your ticket money not only contributes towards the upkeep of this elegant vessel, it helps to maintain the upland footpaths and the awe-inspiring landscape of the Lake District, and goes towards the maintenance of local properties like Hill Top, Allan Bank and Townend.

So if you sailed with us last year, we’d like to say ‘thank you’ for spending your money with us, you’re a diamond.

We hope to see you again in 2017.
