A day in the life of a volunteer

Penny wearing at National Trust hat available to buy

Meet Penny, she’s been volunteering with us for around two years now and we thought it would be insightful to share her volunteering story with you.

Penny began volunteering at The Weir Garden in early 2018 and she describes her role as doing anything but gardening! Penny’s role is a Visitor Experience Volunteer which means she helps plan and prepare for events, help with the everyday running of the sight and interacting with visitors on their day out here. Penny helped man our pop-up shop whilst it was here and still helps tidy and sort the tea-tent today. Sometimes when we are busy, Penny will give Visitor Reception a hand with handing out leaflets and scanning membership cards, enjoying meeting lots of friendly people.

" I chose The Weir as I have fond memories from visiting the garden several years ago and I already volunteered at two other local Trust properties and have really enjoyed it. I decided to offer my help when The Weir made a call out for volunteers"
- Penny Morpeth

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and it’s really interesting when everyone’s together to see how a love of history and heritage have brought all of these people together, sharing this common ground and developing new friendships.

Penny has worked in a volunteer role for over thirty years where as for many of our volunteers it’s a first.

" I decided to volunteer for the National Trust as I like to be doing something and enjoy meeting new people and talking to them. I have had a very full professional life and could not contemplate ‘placid retirement’. Helping other people, however small, keeps you active and makes you feel valued. Doing something new helps the brain to keep active."
