The Workhouse in 20 objects winner: toy car
Everyone knows something of workhouse life thanks to Charles Dickens and Oliver Twist. It comes as a surprise therefore to find the Guardians in Victorian times were aware that children needed to play and that some toys were provided.
This little toy car shows that children also played here in more recent times. Found beind a stud partition in the children's dormitory, this Galanite car was probably left by a child resident living in the bedsit in the 1960s. The bedsit provided social housing for needy families as late as the 1970s and can still be visited today.
" I like to think that, although the car remained, the children might have gone on to better lives elsewhere."
