Halloween half term at Trerice

Harvested gourds and squashes.

As harvest ends the Trerice barton prepares to welcome the long winter ahead. With a seasonal trail, storytelling and corn dolly making to celebrate a bountiful harvest.

Costume day

On Monday 21 October the Trerice Costume Group will be opening up their wardrobes packed to the brim with dresses, ruffs and doublets suitable for the whole family. The team will be running two drop in sessions from 11am-1pm and 2-4pm in the hayloft.

Corn dolly making

When the land at Trerice was farmed the end of the harvest would’ve been celebrated with a great feast for the labourers and tenants.

Corn dollies were made from the very last sheaf of corn cut and were a symbolic tribute to the Pagan Corn Spirit that lived there until the following spring. With the introduction of Christianity they became a token of love or craftsmanship. Show your skill, or affections, and make your own this autumn half term on Wednesday 23 October and Friday 25 October between 11am-4pm, £1 each.

With summer a fond and distant memory join Trerice volunteer storytellers for folklore and superstitions ahead of the approaching Halloween. Inspired by the ‘droll tellers’ they’ll be sharing tales of mermaids, pixies and Cornish giants during scheduled sessions on Thursday 24 October and Saturday 26 October.

Half term trail

Take part in the half term trail at Trerice and explore the house learning about traditional Halloween superstitions as you go. Search the garden and see how many scarecrows you can spot, don't forget to design your own on the back of your trail sheet.

Halloween late night opening

On one of the creepiest nights of the year, Trerice will extend the opening hours of the house into the evening, closing at 7.30pm with last entry to the house at 7pm.

Inspired by the end of the harvest, Trerice will be full of special pumpkin displays and scarecrows – just watch out for the ones that have come to life and some of the other ominous characters lurking in the shadows.
