A walking tour to take in the sites and heritage of Druids Heath, an estate on the edge of South Birmingham. The estate was originally built as council housing for slum clearance and is home to over 2000 people. It has changed a lot since 1965 when it officially opened; this tour will highlight some of those changes. The tour includes a postcard pack of photographs and artwork relevant to the tour. Starting at the 50-bus terminus and ending at the Outpost Arts Centre. Ticket price includes entrance to 'The Opening Ceremony’ exhibition*. Led by Jayne Murray This event will last for 2 hours including breaks. This is an outdoor experience so please dress for the weather.
*An exhibition based on the Opening Ceremony Brochure from when the Druids Heath estate was officially opened in 1965. This is a look back in time to when the estate was first imagined and built. The Opening Ceremony Brochure is held in the Wolfson Centre Archives in the library of Birmingham. While the brochure cannot be displayed outside of controlled conditions, the exhibition reproduces and highlights different aspects of the document. This has been supplemented by imagery collected from residents over the past 8 years.
