In partnership with the University of Exeter, we’re excited to be part of HistoryScapes, a new app that brings the history of Greenway's garden to life. HistoryScapes aims to help visitors explore historic landscapes and discover more about the history of the places cared for by the National Trust.

What is HistoryScapes?

HistoryScapes* is a free app that takes users on a GPS-triggered trail at Greenway, connecting visitors to the garden’s heritage. The trail is led by a fictional historical figure and inspired by Greenway during the Second World War, offering a ‘living history’ format to give visitors the sense of having one foot in the past, the other in the present.

Greenway is the fourth trail on the HistoryScapes app, which was launched in 2025. Nearby Saltram in Plymouth, the Devil’s Punch Bowl in Surrey and Quarry Bank in Cheshire were three National Trust properties selected to participate in the pilot project.

Meet Nora and Tom

Set in 1940, the ‘Voices of the Garden’ trail follows wartime evacuee Nora as she uncovers the secrets of Agatha Christie’s country estate, shown around by Tom, a gardener who not only knows Greenway’s stories, but how to tap into the garden’s hidden voices. Inspired by the real story of Greenway during World War II, the trail invites you to step into the past and join Nora on an unexpected and fantastical adventure.
