Explore Chedworth Roman Villa with Dr Martin Papworth
Join us for a special opportunity to explore Chedworth Roman Villa with the archaeologist who knows it best.
- Booking not needed
- Free event (admission applies)
On Saturday, 25 July, during the Festival of Archaeology, Dr Martin Papworth will lead free guided tours of Chedworth Roman Villa and share the discoveries he has made through years of research and excavation.
You will hear how his work has deepened our understanding of Chedworth's past, including his dating of Britain's only known mosaic from the fifth century. This discovery is transforming what we know about the final years of Roman Britain.
Dr Papworth will also explore the wider story behind other significant finds such as a fragment of glass from an ancient perfume bottle, rare marble that only the most influential in the Empire could access, remains of internationally significant wall paintings in the cold plunge pool, and the oldest known plan of Chedworth, which is revealing details we may have overlooked for more than a century and a half.
Tours take place at 11:30, 13:30 and 15:00. Capacity 25 people per tour. Normal admission charges apply, with free entry for National Trust members. No pre-booking. Ask for a token at the Welcome desk on arrival.
