Festival of Archaeology: Test Pits
During this year's Festival of Archaeology, the Hinton Heritage and Archaeology Team (HART) will be undertaking test pits in the orchard area. Come along and see what they discover!
- Booking not needed
- Free event (admission applies)
This year between July 25th and August 2nd, the HART team will be opening a number of new 1m2 archaeological test pits. The aim is to improve our understanding of what lies buried under the orchard and how that relates to the medieval and possibly earlier structures that exist.
The orchard is an area of high archaeological potential due to it being the supposed location of an earlier House footprint at Hinton. The area has been subject to geophysical survey in 2014 and an excavation in 2015 identified evidence for substantial medieval and post-medieval activity on the site, including a probable medieval building to the west of the church.
