Solar Eclipse at The White Cliffs of Dover

There's a deep partial solar eclipse on Wednesday, 12 August, and you could have a great view from White Cliffs. High up on Foxhill Down, you'll have the unique sight of Dover Castle silhouetted by the eclipsing evening Sun.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

See the deep partial solar eclipse on Wednesday, 12 August from the iconic White Cliffs of Dover. From the visitor centre, make your way up the hill onto Foxhill Down, then continue up to the top of the hill for a great view of the eclipse. The Moon starts to come between the Earth and the Sun at around 6.18 pm, and the eclipse is at its maximum at 7.13 pm, before finishing just after 8 pm. We recommend arriving no later than 6.00 pm to see the entire eclipse. Depending on where you park, it will be a 10-15 minute walk to the best viewpoint. The visitor centre cafe and shop will remain open until 7.30 pm, and the car park gates and toilets will be locked at 8.30 pm.

The basics

Accessibility

Depending on your position, you should be able to view at least some of the eclipse from level 4 parking. There is an accessible track from level 4 parking into Foxhill down, but the view may be obstructed by trees.

Meeting point

The easiest route to view the eclipse is to park in level 4 parking, go through one of the pedestrian gates into Foxhill Down, then continue to climb to the top of the hill.

Suitability for children

Supervised children are welcome

What to bring and wear

The weather forecast is good, but as with all rural locations, it quickly cools down around sunset, so please dress appropriately.

Other

There is a tight bend and sharp slope into level 4 parking, and long vehicles such as motorhomes and those with low suspension may ground. For these vehicles, use level 3 parking and walk up the hill into Foxhill Down. Please ensure you bring and use proper solar viewing glasses or a safe solar filter to view the eclipse - we do not stock these items in the shop. Normal parking charges apply. National Trust members and valid Blue Badge holders can park for free. No camping or overnight stays. Please ensure your vehicle is off-site before 8.30 pm as the site gates will be locked then and a release fee applies. You are welcome to bring a picnic. Please take all waste home with you. No BBQs, camping stoves or other portable appliances using a naked flame anywhere on site. IMPORTANT: there is a high risk of wildfires due to the recent hot, dry weather. Please be especially careful when smoking, and pick up your litter, as bottles and metal foil can focus the Sun's rays. Please take used disposable vapes to a retailer or supermarket with proper recycling facilities.
