Animals in Mairi’s Garden tour with artist Eleanor Wheeler
Join ceramic artist Eleanor Wheeler who will conclude her residency at Mount Stewart by displaying a series of her ceramic sculptures in the Mairi Garden.
- Booking not needed
- Free event (admission applies)
The sculptures are inspired by some of the animals associated with the history of Mount Stewart, the gardens and the Londonderry family and aim to make links between the past, present.
The work reflects the history of this small formal garden designed by Lady Edith that used to contain animal sculptures and live creatures to amuse the children. Originally a Rock Garden, this garden was developed in the early 1920s at the time when Mairi was placed here in her pram every day to take in the sea air.
Some animals, such as the Stewart dragon and cheetah, were inspired by sculptures in the Dodo Walk and Italian Garden. Others are based on natural forms, plants and animals; such as monkeys puzzling.
Many of these sculptures, along with ceramic ‘mandalas' created with groups from Kilcooley Women’s Centre, Artsekta, staff and volunteers, were made at Mount Stewart.
Eleanor's work and the work of the staff and volunteers will be on display in the Mairi Garden between the 10th and 24th September.
Eleanor will lead a walk and talk about the work on Thursday 17th September between 2-4pm.
This should last 45mins to an hour, free to attend no booking required (general admission fee applies).
