Heritage Open Days - Worksop Canal Walk
As part of this years Heritage Open Days, join our volunteers for a free family walk along the canal through Worksop. Spend time together and discover the stories of the canal as you walk.

The 46 mile long Chesterfield Canal meanders from the River Trent through to Chesterfield, travelling through Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire. The canal has over 250 years of history, and this Heritage Open Day you can discover more about the stories it holds.
Starting at Mr Straws House, our volunteers will take you on a 4.5 mile walk along the canal. As well as discovering snippets of history about this fascinating canal and it's role in the history of Worksop, this walk will be an opportunity to meet new people and be out and about together. For any children joining the walk, there will be a free canal spotter trail too.

The route includes hard surfaces, uneven towpath sections, and is close to the water. The route can be accessed by wheelchairs and pushchairs. We can provide headphones and portable hearing loops for those who need it.

- What to bring and wear
This is a 4.5 mile walk along the canal towpath so please wear footwear that is comfortable to walk in. We also advise you to bring a drink and you may wish to bring snacks.

Please note that your ticket does not include entry to Mr Straws House. Admission to Mr Straws House is free on the 12th September in celebration of Heritage Open Days 2026. If you wish to visit Mr Straws House as well as participate in the Canal Walk, we advise booking your free admission ticket on our website in advance of your visit. We do welcome those who have not prebooked, but we cannot guarantee entry for walk in visitors.
