Why is a semi-detached house in Nottinghamshire frozen in time? That question sits at the heart of a new episode of the National Trust’s Back When History Podcast, which turns its attention to Mr Straw’s House, where the passage of time is scarcely noticeable.

Recorded at Endcliffe Villa, 7 Blyth Grove, the episode, The House Where Time Stood Still, takes listeners room by room through a home that has barely changed since the 1920s. From furniture and décor to everyday household items, the house offers an extraordinary insight into how one family chose to live long after modern life had moved on.

The Straw family lived in the house for over 60 years, deliberately preserving their surroundings and routines. While the outside world embraced new technologies and fashions, the Straws remained rooted in the familiar, creating what is now one of the National Trust’s most intimate and evocative historic homes.

Through the podcast, listeners can discover more about the family’s story and the reasons behind their decision to hold on to the past, as well as what this unique house reveals about social change in the 20th century.

Mr Straw’s House is currently closed for its annual winter clean, an essential process that helps care for the collection which contains over 30,000 items. While the doors are closed, the podcast offers a chance to step inside and stay connected with the property.

The house will reopen to visitors on Thursday 5 March. Bookings can be made 4 weeks in advance by calling 0344 249 1895 or online through the website.
