Bishopsland Educational Trust Summer School: Stone Setting
27-29 August: a 3-day, intermediate-to-advanced course to learn square setting.
- Booking essential
You will be square setting: learning how to use rectangular wire to fabricate a square the correct size for a square faceted stone; and how to use files and burrs to create a seat for the stone, resulting in a finished mount for a square stone.
Then you will go onto square setting using square tube: learning how to use square tube to create a bezel mount for a square stone and how to finesse it so the stone sits correctly for setting.
Pulling all these mount settings together, you will learn how to set the stone in both settings using a hammer and punch. This includes learning about how to hold the stone for setting with either thermolock, setters cement or polymorph.
Our 3-day intermediate-to-advanced courses are primarily for the Bishopsland Fellows community and other more advanced makers.
Your tutor for this course is Machi de Waard, a designer/jeweller who has been making modernist jewellery in silver and gold in her studio in Reading, Berkshire for over 17 years. In 2021, her book Silver Jewellery Making, written with fellow jeweller Janet Richardson, was published by award-winning craft publisher Search Press. In 2023, she was awarded a Master’s in Jewellery and Metal from the prestigious Royal College of Art, and in 2024, Machi received two awards from the Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council.
The course takes place over three days, from 27-29 August. The course fee includes accommodation.
