    Start point

    Stage 1

From car park, go through the wooden double gates along a tarmacked path. Bear left – you’ll see the house on your right – pause at the gate to admire Lytes Cary Manor. On your left is a round water tower. Keep left and look for a waymarker post with bands coloured red, white and purple which leads to a gravel path. Follow the path until it opens out into a field with an information board.

    Stage 2

Turn left and follow the field margin, keeping the woodland on your left. Follow along the path, which skirts three sides of the woodland with open fields on your right.

    Stage 3

When you reach a wide, open area, turn right through a gate along a wide, grassy path.

    Stage 4

When you reach a waymarker, bear left diagonally across the field until you come to a wooden gate. Follow a short track through the gate, then turn left again.

    Stage 5

Follow the path along the field margin, with woodland and thick hedges on your left. Follow the waymarkers to a gap in the hedge, then turn right along the bridleway.

    Stage 6

At the next waymarker, turn left (the bridleway carries straight on) along a broad path through farmland. Keep a lookout for bullrushes, which show where a scrape and hibernaula have been created.

    Stage 7

When you reach the pond, turn left for a short walk down the driveway (take care as this is used by cars) to the car park.
