A Celebration of Roses - 2025
Showcasing our beautiful walled rose garden, this joyful celebration highlights the stunning displays the roses at Polesden Lacey create every summer.
- Booking not needed
- Free event (admission applies)
Roses hold a special place in the history of Polesden Lacey, not least within the tranquil and sweetly scented Edwardian walled garden. In the central beds hybrid teas and modern bush roses mingle with floribundas and hybrid musks. More than 100 rambling and climbing roses clothe the pergola and walls. The outer borders are home to many wonderful old roses and species roses, from which we breed our modern varieties.
Several new and experimental developments are also happening this year to improve the soil and health of our roses, including growing green manures, which also attract pollinating insects.
A number of rose-inspired installations will also be on display in the grounds throughout the celebration. These include beautiful metal rose installations, created by metalwork artists at the Camelia Botnar Foundation. The charity provides residential training and work experience to help young people learn a skilled trade. The roses in the installation will be for sale and can be collected after the celebration finishes.
The Grange, a local community centre for adults with learning disabilities will showcase their work in a beautiful, rose-inspired display under the west loggia.
Finally, a glorious display of hand-crocheted roses made by our talented volunteers will be on show outside the bookshop and welcome area.
Visit during our celebration to learn more about the roses, the history of the garden and the work involved in maintaining it.

The rose garden was transformed during Margaret Greville's time from a vegetable garden into a sheltered haven, filled with many varieties of her favourite flower, the rose. This was a highlight of any visit for her esteemed guests and she was pictured here frequently, proudly showing off the roses to dukes, kings and maharajas. A huge amount of work and investment has gone into restoring the rose garden in recent years, including renovating all the path and replanting many of the rambling roses on the pergola. There is no doubt Maggie would have been delighted by the enjoyment our visitors get from her beautiful rose garden today.
