'Three Gowns for Three Crowns' – a talk by Grace Evans

The Olive Matthews Dress Collection at Chertsey Museum has lent the beautiful kimono, once owned by Queen Mary, that is currently on display as part of the Dress to Impress exhibition at Polesden Lacey. Grace Evans, Curator, Lecturer, Author and Keeper of Costume at Chertsey Museum has curated the Olive Matthews Dress Collection since 2001. She will talk about three important items within the collection that have royal connections: a House of Worth dress worn to the Coronation of King Edward VII, a state gown which belonged to Queen Mary and a debutante’s ensemble from the reign of King George VI.
Grace will explore each piece in detail; revealing their historical significance and uncovering the fascinating stories of the people who wore the garments.

A volunteer-run shuttle bus service runs from the visitor welcome area to the house entrance, subject to availability. The entrance to the house is step-free and wheelchair accessible. Toilet facilities (including an accessible toilet and changing facilities) are available on site.
