Chirk Castle's Grand Staircase is designed in the ‘Neo-Classical’ style. The medieval tower in which it is situated gives this space its unusual semi-circular shape. In order to protect this space for future generations to enjoy, we have erected scaffolding to allow a specialist team to take a closer look at the ceiling.

What is the project?

The project aims to help us look after the precious ceiling at Chirk Castle. It will allow a specialist conservation team to safely and closely examine the ceiling in the Grand Staircase area of the castle to determine its condition and identify and carry out any necessary repair work.

What does the project aim to do?

A specialist team is examining the Grand Staircase ceiling.

Scaffolding and a platform have been installed so that we can examine the fragile plasterwork of the ceiling in closer detail. This will allow us to review its condition and identify and carry out any necessary repairs.

This will help us ensure future generations can enjoy these ceilings too.

Protecting the building’s ecology is also a priority, and the team has planned the work carefully to safeguard the bats living here.

Collection items housed on the Grand Staircase have also been moved, or boxed in where this isn’t possible, to protect them from any potential damage.

When will this happen?

Work to examine the condition of the ceiling and identify any necessary works required will take place throughout 2026.

The project will need to be adaptable depending on what we find. Therefore, it would be unrealistic to give a final completion date.

Will this work affect my visit to the castle staterooms?

We aim to keep this special place open for everyone to enjoy, and to share more about the work happening to this historic building where possible.

During the work you will be able to follow the usual route through the castle staterooms starting in Cromwell Hall. However, there will be large-scale scaffolding surrounding the Grand Staircase and on the landing area. The remaining state rooms will not be impacted.

As the project progresses, we’ll be updating this page with all the latest news and updates so be sure to check back to discover more.

Thank you for your support and understanding as we undertake this important conservation work. We hope you can join us this year to learn more about how we care for this special place.

Every visit, donation and membership helps to protect and care for this historic building so it can be enjoyed by the next generation.
