Calan Gaeaf at Dinefwr : October Half Term

Step into the traditions of a Welsh Halloween, where ancient folklore, ghostly visitors and magical play bring Newton House and the Oak Yard to life.

  • Booking not needed
  • Free event (admission applies)

This autumn, discover the magic and mystery of Calan Gaeaf, the Welsh celebration that marks the turning of the seasons, when the nights grow longer and the veil between worlds begins to thin.

Journey through Newton House and uncover ancient tales that have echoed through the Tywi Valley for generations. Listen for whispers in the Butler's Pantry, stir curious potions, transform yourself in the Brushing Room and gather around the great wassail bowl as stories of the Ladi Wen and the fearsome Hwch Ddu Gwta come to life.

Inspired by Welsh folklore and seasonal traditions, the house becomes an immersive world of storytelling, imagination and discovery, where every room holds a new surprise. The much-loved Woodland Theatre returns, inviting families to create their own magical tales beneath the autumn sky.

Outside, the Oak Yard offers space for playful autumn adventures.

Rooted in Welsh culture and designed for curious minds of all ages, Calan Gaeaf at Dinefwr is a celebration of folklore, creativity and the changing season, a chance to discover the stories that have always belonged to this landscape.

Whether you come to meet the mysterious Hwch Ddu Gwta, craft eerie creatures from light and shadow or simply soak up the atmosphere, there's magic waiting around every corner.

Activities are included with normal admission to Newton House. Oak Yard activities are free to enjoy (normal car parking charges apply).
