Calan Gaeaf at Powis Castle and Garden: Hunt for the Hwch Ddu Gwta

National Trust Cymru is celebrating Calan Gaeaf across Wales this Autumn.
Calan Gaeaf marks the beginning of winter in the Welsh calendar (1 November). Traditionally, the night before, Nos Galan Gaeaf (31 October) is said to be a time where the veil between our world and the Otherworld is at its thinnest - meaning mystical creatures can roam the earth.
On Nos Galan Gaeaf, communities lit fires and gathered for seasonal customs. As the evening ended, children were encouraged to race home. The last child leaving was warned that the Hwch Ddu Gwta, a tail-less black sow, might catch them. The creature belongs to a world of oral storytelling, seasonal games and folklore.
At Powis, follow a family-friendly trail through the garden in search of the Hwch Ddu Gwta's den. Take care, there are 10 Hwch Ddu Gwta hiding around the garden, ready to chase unsuspecting visitors. Follow the pumpkins and see if you can spot them all.
Along the way, discover more about Calan Gaeaf and the story of the Hwch Ddu Gwta, and listen out for the sounds of snuffling and squealing coming from the creature's den.
Children can enjoy a fun seasonal adventure while discovering one of Wales's most enduring folklore traditions.
