The National Trust team has a busy year ahead in 2026. We're conserving the windows at the front of the house and giving the North-East Bedroom a new lease of life. The house and garden will be open as usual while these works go ahead.

Conserving the windows at the front of the house

From mid-February 2026, we'll have scaffolding up at the front of Mompesson House while we restore and redecorate the windows on the ground, first and second floors. This is part of our routine maintenance schedule.

These works will involve sanding, painting and minor repairs and will weatherproof the windows as well as protecting the building for the future.

Mompesson House will be open as usual during these works.

Restoring and reopening the North-East Bedroom

This space was created in 1701 and we believe it was used as a bedroom until the last resident Denis Martineau converted it into a bathroom around 1952.

The National Trust removed the bathroom in 2003 and converted it into an exhibition space in 2008. The last exhibition was in 2020 and the room was then used for storage until the decision was made to restore the room and reopen it to the public.

Work includes restoring the panelling, ceiling, flooring and fireplace and preservation of an exceptionally rare 18th century papier mache decoration.

The newly restored space will be opened to visitors by summer 2026 and will enable us to share more stories about Mompesson House and its former residents and show pictures and furniture not currently on display.

History of Mompesson House

Mompesson House stands on the north side of Choristers’ Green, within the Cathedral Close of Salisbury, Wiltshire. It is a picture–perfect townhouse of the early 18th century. Leased to a succession of different families, its history is tied to the city, the cathedral and to the many people who have called the house their home.
