Happy Birthday Mr Thornhill
Come and celebrate the life and works of Sir James Thornhill on the 350th anniversary of his birth in a new exhibition in the Hall this summer.
- Booking not needed
- Free event (admission applies)
Sir James Thornhill is the artist behind the magnificent painted staircase at Hanbury Hall. The paintings were the main reason why the National Trust acquired the property, as it made Hanbury Hall stand out among other grand houses in the area.
The paintings display scenes from Greek mythology, which were particularly popular in the 17th and 18th centuries and comment on political satire of the day.
Learn about Thornhill himself and how he produced these beautiful artworks, and the fascinating stories behind them in this new exhibition. There will be displays and new interpretation, as well as highlight talks on the paintings.
