At the very end of his career, weary of city life and declaring himself “sick of towns,” Elgar withdrew to a secluded cottage deep in the woodlands of West Sussex. There he composed what he considered to be, one of his finest achievements, his Piano Quintet.
Based on a macabre legend, the quintet was unlike anything Elgar had written before or would write again. In this illuminating talk, Richard Westwood-Brookes explores the origins of the work, uncovering what inspired Elgar to write it and why he came to regard it as his greatest achievement.
