Landscape as Witness: A Remembrance reflection
Take a rare look inside St James' chapel to discover the wartime stories of local people and embrace a moment of calm. Pause in the gardens at our Avenue of Remembrance to reflect on the relationship between landscape, memory and human connection.

The landscape at Wentworth Castle Gardens has borne witness to many human stories throughout its long history and centuries of change.
For generations, the communities of Stainborough, Hood Green and Dodworth have been deeply rooted in the places they call home. Families have lived and worked here, creating lasting connections to the landscape around them.
During the two World Wars, many local men and women left these communities to serve their country, support the war effort or fight for causes they believed in. Some never returned, others came home to rebuild their lives, carrying experiences that shaped not only their own futures, but those of generations to come.
This special Remembrance event explores the stories of estate workers and local residents whose lives were touched by war. Through personal histories rooted in this landscape, discover how the past continues to influence the present and shape our understanding of place, memory and belonging.
Step inside St James' Chapel to read these stories, take a moment for reflection, and consider your own memories and connections in an ever-changing world.
St James' Chapel is one of the site's Grade II listed buildings. Built in 1841 for the Vernon-Wentworth family, this Gothic Revival chapel is usually used by Northern College and is rarely open to the public.
To reach the chapel, you'll pass through the bookshop above the café, where you can browse pre-loved books and admire our Remembrance poppy displays.
