Family fun this summer at Wicken Fen
Join us for fun and adventures throughout the summer. Enjoy the summer buzz by taking part in activities such as pond dipping, den building and geocaching.
Adventures to come along and try
Pick up a spotting sheet in the Visitor Centre showing the colourful butterflies that you can see on the reserve. You can even add the butterflies that you see to the Big Butterfly Count which takes place across the UK from 20 Jul to 20 August. Take a wander up to the Woodland Walk which is a great place to find butterflies, and has plenty of shady spots to take a rest on hot days. Suitable for all ages.
Borrow one of our GPS devices from the Cycle Centre and choose either the Beginners’ Trail (age 5 +) or the Bakers’ Fen Trail (age 8+). Find your way round the trail using a GPS device and check out what is in the geocaches you find along the way. Our Cycle Centre staff will be happy to get you started if you haven’t geocached before.
Looking for Konik ponies and Highland cattle from the new Tower Hide
Borrow some binoculars from the Visitor Centre and take the Nature Trail to the New Tower Hide. A short climb up the steps into the hide gives you a great view over Verrall’s Fen, where some of our grazing herd animals live. See what you can spot from the hide. You can stop off at the Old Tower Hide on the way back to see if you can spot any hobbies as they feed on the insects hovering over the Wicken Lode below. (age 8+ ).
Our den building area contains all the materials you need to make the den of your dreams! Whether you want to build a space craft, a pirate ship, or a dinosaur cave – the only limit is your imagination. It’s just a short walk to find den building in the Woodland Walk. (Age 3+).
Just ask in the Visitor Centre for directions or help with any of these activities.
