Walking trail

Arlington Court is a Regency house nestling in a wooded valley in unspoilt North Devon. This is an ideal spring May, when the bluebells in Deer Park Wood are at their best.

The car park, garden and toilets at Arlington are open and you need to

book tickets before you visit. Members can book for free, while non-members will need to pay when booking. We'll be releasing tickets every Friday. Please note we’ll be turning people away who arrive and haven't booked. We're looking forward to welcoming you back.

Begin from the tearoom, follow the purple way mark signs. Head along the drive towards the old lake and wider estate. At the gate with herons on top, turn right onto the road, then turn left down the road, past Home Farm.


Continue down the road, past the first public footpath on your right, then take the second public footpath on the right.


Walk straight across this field, over the stile and go down the steps, which are by the edge of the wood.


At the bottom of the steps, turn right, follow the woodland track. After 220yd (200m), go through the gate and follow the path across the field.

Go through the gate, follow the path and turn right at the next junction, following signs for Arlington. Go over the stile, heading uphill, and then go over another stile. Follow the path up the hill and between the hedgebanks, for approximately 440yd (400m).

At Glebe Cottage (yellow building), turn left onto the tarmac road and then right towards Arlington. The road then forks. Do not go down the right-hand fork, carry on around the main track. You are walking around the back of the historic stable block, where the track is a bedrock formation. Keep right and you will find yourself outside the gates to the stable yard.


Follow the path down the hill, passing St James Church on your right. You are then in Arlington Court's gardens.

From the gardens, follow the path back to the tea-room, where you will find signs directing you to the car park.

Fairly easy terrain: one section of steps and one steady climb, following footpaths (public rights of way) through the estate which can be muddy.

From main car park just 200yd (180m), through reception. Admission charges will apply during the property's opening times throughout the year.
